Why Fuel Cell Testing Instruments are Superior to Semi-Conductor "Novelty" Screeners
- Alcohol-specific detection means no false positives. Fuel cells only detect and measure alcohol. Semi-conductors cannot distinguish between alcohol and other substances, thus producing false positives and potential false accusations.
- Accurate alcohol measurement. Fuel cells are more precise than semi-conductors.
- Able to be calibrated. Fuel cell instruments can be calibrated using certified alcohol concentrations to ensure accurate Breath Alcohol Content (BAC) measurements. Semi-conductor testers are typically not able to be calibrated or do not include instructions regarding the need for calibration so accuracy deteriorates dramatically over time.
- Long life expectancy. Lifeloc fuel cells have a life expectancy of 6-8 years with virtually no limit on the number of tests. Although very inexpensive, semi-conductor devices typically have a very short life span.
- Supported by full-time factory technical support and training programs. Lifeloc instruments are backed and supported by professionals who provide training on use and calibration of instruments as well as technical support for any operational needs.
Unlike novelty products, all Lifeloc's models are precision instruments. They are fuel-cell based, DOT evidential-approved (LifeGuard is not a DOT evidential approved instrument), accurate, alcohol-specific, and reliable. They have virtually no limit on usage or number of tests.
Lifeloc recommends fuel cell units over semi-conductor "novelty" products in any application where an accurate and valid test result matters or could have any consequences for the individual being tested.
Q&A
Q: Do Lifeloc models use fuel cells?
A: All Lifeloc models are fuel cell instruments. Lifeloc fuel cells are full size sensors of the highest quality available, with exceptionally long life and durability. Few competitive models can make these claims.
Q: Are Lifeloc instruments approved by the Department of Transportation (DOT) for evidential use?
A: All Lifeloc models (except LifeGuard) are DOT-approved to the highest evidential standard. They are listed on the official “Conforming Products List (CPL) - Evidential.” Some semi-conductor based devices are “DOT-Approved” models but are only approved for screening purposes and cannot be used in any evidential application.
Q: How are Lifeloc instruments calibrated?
A: All Lifeloc models are electronically calibrated. Electronic Calibration is a process that can be completed in two minutes or less by an experienced operator. The calibration process on Lifeloc models is menu-driven with industry-unique, “plain English” prompts instead of codes. No disassembly, parts replacement, special tools, or keys are required, unlike many competitive models.
