Where
are Portable Breath Alcohol Testers used?
Although most often associated with
drunk driving, PBT's are actually in widespread daily use in many
other applications. Lifeloc Technologies supplies devices for many
different uses, such as employment testing, transportation workers,
police use, prisons, rehabilitation programs, corrections departments,
probations, parole, court systems, schools, juvenile offender programs,
international traffic enforcement, and personal/family use.
Some
applications require in-depth knowledge and are highly regulated.
Other usages require little specialized knowledge, and are not formally
regulated. For more information visit the Buyer's Guide.

What
is the difference between 'DOT Approved' and 'Approved to do DOT
testing'?
The difference is between product testing and approval
(DOT Approved), and a complete evidential testing program for certain
employees, which is mandated and regulated by the US Department
of Transportation (Approved to do DOT testing).
Regarding products: Many devices are tested and approved by the
DOT and listed on their Conforming Products List (CPL).
Regarding
the program: Separately, a few of the devices on the CPL have all
the features which qualify them for use in the required random testing
program for transportation employees (also used by many other employers).
This program is required by Federal Regulation 49CFR Part 40. It
specifies exact testing procedures, training, and certifications.

The Lifeloc FC Series and the Phoenix are both approved on the CPL.
Why can't the DOT-approved FC-20 be used for a DOT testing program?
Although the FC20 has an on-board memory
and printing capability, the additional product features of the
Phoenix® and EV30, particularly the DOT required Air Blank, plus
an extensive training, certification network and the DOT approved,
published Quality Assurance Plan make them the only approved, Lifeloc
products for Workplace alcohol testing programs. In addition to
the air blank, the Phoenix® has automatic altitude compensation,
rechargeable batteries and EasyMode software.

What
is passive testing?
Passive testing refers to a means of
testing not using a direct exhalation from a person through a mouthpiece,
but rather using a sampling of air or breath from wherever the device
is placed. No mouthpiece is used. This could be from a subject blowing
toward the unit from a distance of about 4-6 inches, or from the
air above a drink container, for example. Passive testing will detect
the presence or absence of alcohol, but not the exact BAC level.
With Lifeloc models Phoenix®, EV30, FC10Plus, or FC20, which contain
passive testing as an installed option, passive tests are simple,
fast, and repeatable. Therefore, for rapid, inexpensive screening
the device can quickly detect the presence of alcohol when used
in the passive mode. If alcohol is detected and the exact BAC level
is then needed for any reason, an immediate second test can be conducted
with the same instrument, using a mouthpiece. In this scenario,
with any of these Lifeloc models, both tests can be completed, and
results obtained, in less than 90 seconds.

Why
does it cost extra to ship dry gas calibration standard?
Dry gas standard is non-flammable,
being a very diluted mixture of ethanol in nitrogen, which is an
inert gas. However, since it is shipped in a pressurized container,
it falls under HAZMAT regulations mandating certain shipping requirements.
These requirements increase shipping costs from the carriers. Lifeloc
will be happy to provide estimates of shipping costs to your location
when ordering.

What
States are you approved in?
The Phoenix®, EV30 and FC Series models
are approved in all 50 states by the U.S. Department of Transportation,
and are listed on the CPL. In addition, since the new FC Series was introduced in 2001, it has already been extensively tested and
approved for law enforcement use by the majority of states, and
has been specifically selected for police and general law-enforcement
use by numerous states. State laws and regulations regarding law
enforcement usage can be complex, and vary widely. For more information
please call Lifeloc at 800-722-4872.
