The most basic certification required by the D.O.T. to conduct valid alcohol screening and confirmation testing is the Breath Alcohol Technician (BAT) 49 CFR training and certification. This training includes the most basic fundamentals of proficiency on the equipment being used. It does not authorize the BAT to do equipment calibrations or enable them to maintain the equipment.

The Certified Lifeloc Operator and Calibration Technician (C-LOCT) training provides an additional certificate, which is distinct from and in addition to the required BAT 49 CFR training. C-LOCT certification provides additional capability in operating and understanding the Lifeloc equipment being used, covers maintenance requirements, and is required to certify the operator in the understanding and capability to calibrate and cal-check the equipment.

In most cases, Lifeloc Instructors and Master Trainers combine the two trainings into one course, which results in the issuance of both the BAT and C-LOCT certificates. The vast majority of Lifeloc users choose this combined course, and thus gain very comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the equipment as well as the certification to Calibrate, Cal-Check and maintain the equipment.
