Lifeloc Provisional Instructor Certification (Train the Trainer) for Breath Alcohol Technicians

What is a Lifeloc Provisional Instructor?

A Lifeloc Provisional Instructor is certified by Lifeloc to train individuals within their own organization as Breath Alcohol Technicians (BATs) and Operator and Calibration Technicians (C-LOCT) under the following provisions:

  • The Instructor may only train those employed by the Instructor's company or family of companies.
  • The Instructor must be certified directly by Lifeloc or a Lifeloc Certified Master Trainer.
  • The Instructor may train only operators (BAT and C-LOCT.)
  • The Instructor must maintain qualifications to conduct BAT training as outlined by the Department of Transportation.
  • The Instructor must abide by Lifeloc's training, certification and fee policies detailed in the Provisional Instructor Agreement.

What are the benefits of becoming a Provisional Instructor?

Having a Provisional Instructor on staff can save an organization time and money especially if your organization has multiple locations or high turnover. Breath Alcohol Technicians can be trained or recertified as needed. But it is important to remember that becoming an Instructor is a significant commitment and that as an Instructor, you are responsible for the integrity of your BAT training and qualification program.

Who can become a Provisional Instructor?

Lifeloc highly recommends that a Provisional Instructor candidate be a practicing Breath Alcohol Technician for a minimum of 3 months. Once this qualification or equivalent is met, all candidates must successfully complete an Instructor (Train the Trainer) course taught at Lifeloc headquarters or by one of Lifeloc's field network of Certified Master Trainers.

What training tools does Lifeloc offer Provisional Instructors?

Lifeloc offers both a classroom and online training program for use by Provisional instructors.

Our classroom solution, the BAT Training Program provides the Instructor with a comprehensive training package offering a professional method to successfully train BATs in accordance with 49 CFR Part 40 of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Alcohol Testing Procedures.

Our online solution allows the student to study the procedural portion of the BAT course at their own pace and at times convenient for their schedule. Once they have successfully completed the online course, the Provisional Instructor will need only review the materials with the candidate and conduct the required mock testing to complete the training.

Contact Lifeloc today for more information on becoming a Provisional Instructor.

Breath Alcohol Technician (BAT) Training

Who is required to become a Breath Alcohol Technician?

Anyone performing DOT mandated breath alcohol testing in accordance with US Department of Transportation protocol must be trained as a Breath Alcohol Technician. Lifeloc recommends that any individual performing non DOT regulated breath alcohol testing in the workplace also become trained as a Breath Alcohol Technician.

What are the training requirements to become a Breath Alcohol Technician?

The BAT candidate must understand and demonstrate proficiency in using the alcohol testing protocol detailed in 49 CFR Part 40 and the training must be in accordance with the DOT Model BAT Course. The training must include both a comprehensive procedural instruction and an equipment proficiency demonstration specific to the manufacturer and model of the breath alcohol testing device being used. The student equipment proficiency demonstration must be observed "live" by the BAT instructor either in person or via webcam.

Lifeloc Master Trainers follow these requirements for both mandated and non-mandated alcohol testing as they ensure the integrity of the breath alcohol testing process.

Who is qualified to train Breath Alcohol Technicians?

Lifeloc Technologies utilizes a nationwide network of Master Trainers, who are experts in the drug and alcohol industry. All are BAT certified, Lifeloc equipment certified and have been practicing Breath Alcohol Technicians for a minimum of one year. Breath Alcohol Technician and Lifeloc Operator and Calibration Technician training is available at our factory in Denver Colorado, at your location or via the web. Web based training includes the online procedural portion and the proficiency demonstration either via web or in person with the Lifeloc Master Trainer.

For large organizations with many BATs and equipment operators across many locations, Lifeloc also offers Provisional Instructor certification which certifies an employee to train other company employees as both Breath Alcohol Technicians and Certified Lifeloc Operator and Calibration Technicians.

Under the US Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, an individual performing urine drug collection must receive qualification training.

A drug collector is defined as a person who instructs and assists employees at a collection site, who receives and makes an initial inspection of the specimen provided by those employees, and who initiates and completes the Chain of Custody Form (CCF.)

The drug collector is the one individual in the drug testing process who has direct, face to face contact with the employee/subject. Without the collector ensuring the integrity of the urine specimen and collection process, the test itself may lose credibility.

What are the training requirements to become a drug collector?

The collector candidate must understand and demonstrate proficiency in following US DOT urine specimen collection procedures, guidelines and any specific DOT agency regulations applicable to the employer for whom collections are performed. This demonstration includes performing observed, error free mock drug collection tests.

Who is qualified to train drug collectors?

Lifeloc Technologies utilizes a network of Master Trainers, who are experts in the drug and alcohol industry. They can provide drug collection training at your location or via the web.

In addition, our Master Trainers offer convenient Drug Collector Instructor certification. This certification will allow you to train your employees as collectors.
